Color Considerations

You have spent time making your design just the way you want it, so it is imperative to take precautions to manage the color correctly. The accuracy of color depends on many factors, starting from the original design itself, all the way to the end of the process at the studio. Although reproducing an exact color isn’t a simple process, with careful consideration you can expect a very close match so that your final prints meet expectations. This section of our website provides many helpful tips and guides for color management that will be helpful during the design and file preparation process. Please keep in mind that even after following these tips and guides, we (or any other printer) cannot guarantee that your color will exactly match due to the nature of gang-run offset printing.

FILE FORMATS:

We accept the following file formats TIF, TIFF, JPG, EPS, PNG, AI, PSD, and PDF.

RESOLUTION

All file formats must have a minimum of 300 dpi (dot per inch) resolution. The images designed for the web are done at a low screen resolution of 72 dpi. Print images need to be created at 300 dpi or there will be a substantial drop in the image quality.

WHAT COLOR MODE SHOULD I USE?

For duplication projects it is best to convert your files to RGB. For replication projects we use a silk screen process. Files for silk screen printing should be in CMYK

CMYK COLOR GUIDE

This system is a standardized color reproduction system. What all this means is that you will likely have to convert your colors from RGB or Pantone to CMYK before submitting your files for print. When converting colors to CMYK be aware that since some colors are out of range or do not have the exact CMYK counterpart, your software will choose a CMYK value closest to that RGB or Pantone color. As a result, your CMYK color may not exactly match the color in the original design and may need some adjusting. It’s best to refer to paper color charts if possible (such as the Pantone Color Matching System guide) before converting your files to achieve the best match achievable. The chart will show Pantone colors, the equivalent CMYK values for those colors, and the CMYK color once converted.

BLEED

Bleed is the portion of the product that will be trimmed off when it is cut to the final size. The purpose of a bleed is to continue a color, image, or design to the edge of the product. Due to the possibility of shifting in the trimming process, a bleed is required to ensure that a white line does not show on the edges of your product. We require ALL files to be built to the full bleed dimension specified for each trim size. We automatically trim the bleed off of each side, which will result in the desired trim size.

FONTS

A.Fonts must be embedded in PDF files.

B. Fonts must be outlined or converted to paths or curves in EPS files.

C. Some fonts have copyright restrictions and will not embed in PDF Files.

D. Quark Express: Fonts and images must be included with all files submitted.

SAFE ZONE

All critical elements (text, images, logos, etc.) must be kept at least 0.125″ inside the edge. Anything left close to edge may be cut off during trimming.

FINALIZE DISCS

Before submitting your discs for duplication for replication, make sure your disc is finalized. It is a best practice to only use single use CD-R and DVD-R for duplication and replication to avoid chaptering and authoring issues. You should also make sure your master is compatible with both Windows and Mac platforms.
